Easy to make homemade flour tortillas, Texas style. The recipe uses flour, baking flour, salt, vegetable oil and milk.

Ingredients

  • 2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp lard or vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup warm milk

Method

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add the oil or lard (if using lard, mix it into the flour using your fingers until wel combined).

Start adding the milk while stirring until all the milk has been added. Continue stirring until a sticky ball forms. Knead on a well floured surface for 3 to 5 minutes until the dough is soft and elastic.

Place the dough in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rest for 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, uncover the dough and divide into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, place onto a large dish and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit for 10 more minutes.

To make the tortillas, place a ball onto a floured surface, press with your palm to flatten and roll out into a circular area using a rolling pin. The final tortillas should be 8 inch in diameter. Cover tortillas covered with a damp cloth until ready to cook.

Cook tortillas in a dry iron skillet or frying pan over high heat (do not use any oil) for 30 seconds per side (the tortillas should start to puff when done).

Keep cooked tortillas warm until ready to use.

Makes 8 tortillas.
