Food Storage tips

Storing beef cuts and ground beef Beef cuts will keep in the freezer in airtight containers or sealed plastic bags for up to 6 months. At 30 degrees Fahrenheit, beef cuts will last for up to 7 days. Ground beef on the other hand will keep the freezer in airtight containers or sealed plastic bags for a period of up to 3 months. If not frozen, ground beef should be used within 2 days, but is is always better to use ground beef immediately.

Storing tomatoes Store tomatoes at room temperature. For full flavoured tomatoes, let them ripen as much as possible. To speed up the ripening process of tomatoes, place them in a closed container or paper bag together with an apple or pear. The ethylene emitted by tomatoes as well as apples and pears helps the ripening process. When tomatoes have ripened, store them in the refrigerator. Bring them to room temperature before using for maximum flavour.
Storing fresh basil leaves Store fresh basil leaves in the refrigerator, loosely wrapped in a plastic bag for up to one week. Make sure that the leaves are completely dry before putting them in the bag, otherwise they will turn black.

Storing ripe bananas Store ripe bananas at a temperature of about 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a lot of humidity and good air circulation.

Storing baking powder Store baking powder tightly covered since moisture will cause it to detoriate faster. Do not keep baking powder for a long time since it loses its strength with time.

Storing bagels Bagels taste best when eaten fresh. For long time storage, wrap then in a paper bag, put them in a plastic bag and freeze them. They will keep for up to 6 months. To use them, remove from the freezer, lightly moisten them with cold water, slice them in half and bake or toast them. Do not use a microwave oven since the result will not be the same.

Storing smoked bacon Bacon sealed in vacuum sealed container will keep for up to a month in the refrigerator. Open bacon will keep for up to 1 week when stored in the refrigerator.

Storing fresh asparagus Asparagus does not store well and should be eaten as soon as possible. To store asparagus place them in a container with water standing upright or wrap their base with a damp towel. This should keep the asparagus fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Storing artichokes The flavour of artichokes starts being affected as soon as the artichoke is cut from the stalk. It is therefore best to eat artichokes as fresh as possible. If you have to store them, put them in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Storing canned apricots Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place. Once opened, store apricots in the refrigerator, in a plastic or glass container, covered, for up to 1 week.
